Why connect Barley to Square

Square already has your purchase history. Barley is what turns that data into a customer-by-customer taste graph and a loyalty program that finally moves the needle on repeat visits.

  • Taste profiles from purchase history

Barley reads what each customer has actually bought — by style, ABV, hop profile, and time of day — and uses that to recommend what to pour next.

  • Segmented release alerts

A new beer hits the tap, Barley pings only the customers whose Square purchase history says they'll love it. No mass blasts.

  • Loyalty without leaving Square

Customers redeem rewards in your existing Square checkout. Your bartenders don't learn a new POS. Your back of house doesn't change.

  • Multi-location aware

A brewery with a taproom on Square for Restaurants and a bottle shop on Square POS sees one unified customer view, scoped per location for analytics.

  • Real-time analytics

Top styles, repeat-visit cohorts, segment-level conversion, beer ROI by campaign — all sourced from your live Square data.

  • Read-only by default

Barley reads from Square. Writebacks (loyalty redemptions, opted-in customer profile updates) are explicit and auditable.

How the Square integration works

Five steps. The first four take five minutes. The fifth is what happens automatically once you're connected.

  1. 1

    OAuth into Square

Click connect; Square's standard OAuth screen lists exactly which scopes Barley reads (Orders, Catalog, Customers — read; Loyalty — read/write). You approve, you're done.

  2. 2

    Pick locations

Multi-location accounts: choose which Square locations Barley should track. You can add or remove locations later from the Barley dashboard.

  3. 3

    Backfill

Barley pulls in 12 months of Square purchase history (configurable) and seeds an initial taste profile for every Square Customer. This runs in the background and is usually done within an hour.

  4. 4

    Customer opt-in

Existing customers opt in to Barley's messaging and recommendations via a QR code in your taproom, a link on your website, or your existing email list. Opt-in is explicit and reversible at any time.

  5. 5

    Barley runs

From here on, every Square transaction sharpens the taste graph in real time. New releases trigger segmented alerts. Loyalty redemptions flow back into Square. The dashboard updates live.

Barley vs. Square Loyalty

Square Loyalty is a points-and-rewards engine. Barley is a customer-intelligence platform that happens to include loyalty. They solve different problems and run side-by-side without conflict.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Square integration take?
Most breweries are connected and live in under five minutes. You authorize Barley in your Square dashboard, point it at the locations you want tracked, and Barley starts building taste profiles from your existing purchase history. No new hardware. No engineer required.
Do I need to disable Square Loyalty to use Barley?
No. Barley sits alongside Square Loyalty — the two products solve different problems. Square Loyalty is a points-and-rewards engine; Barley adds AI-driven taste profiles, segmented release alerts, and a customer-facing chat experience that Square Loyalty doesn't offer. If you're already running Square Loyalty, keep it. If you're not, Barley's built-in rewards engine covers that ground for breweries that want one tool.
What Square data does Barley read?
Transaction-level data from Square Catalog and Orders: items purchased, modifiers, timestamps, tab totals, location, and (for opted-in customers) the linked Square Customer profile with email or phone. Barley does not read payment-card data, employee-level data, or unrelated reports. Read scopes are explicit and visible in your Square authorization screen.
What does Barley write back to Square?
Loyalty redemptions and (optionally) updates to the Square Customer profile when a customer opts into Barley's segmented messaging. Anything Barley writes is documented and auditable in your Square dashboard.
Does Barley work with Square for Restaurants and Square Kiosk?
Yes. Barley reads from the standard Square Orders API, which all Square POS variants — Square POS, Square for Restaurants, Square Register, Square Terminal, Square Kiosk, and Square Online — populate. The integration is location-aware: a brewery with a taproom (Square for Restaurants) and a retail bottle shop (Square POS) on the same Square account sees a unified customer view in Barley.
What if I have multiple locations on Square?
Barley handles multi-location accounts natively. Each location is tracked separately in the dashboard, but a customer who buys at multiple locations gets one unified taste profile. You decide whether release alerts are sent location-by-location or brand-wide.
Is Square data handling PII-compliant?
Yes. Customer data is stored in our SOC 2-aligned infrastructure, never sold or shared, and customers can opt out at any time. Email and phone are only stored for opted-in customers; transaction data alone (without a Square Customer link) is retained anonymously for analytics. Full data-handling detail is on the privacy page when you connect.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
You own your data. On cancellation, Barley provides a one-click export of taste profiles, opt-in customer lists, and aggregate analytics. After 30 days the data is permanently deleted from Barley's systems. Square is unaffected — your transaction history continues to live in Square.

Not on Square?

Barley is Square-first today, with Toast, Arryved, and Lightspeed on the immediate roadmap. If you're on one of those, book a demo and we'll add you to the early-access list — most of the loyalty mechanics are POS-agnostic, so you'll be running on day one.
